The Research

In doing the research for this report Movoto gathered a list of the 100 most populous cities in the USA from the 2012 Census (excluding Tucson, Honolulu because they do not report thefts in a way acceptable to the FBI) They looked at each of these cities using official statistics from the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report. They included the following:

  • Murder
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Assault
  • Burglary
  • Theft
  • Vehicle theft

Movoto then divided these crimes into four categories:

  • Murders
  • Violent crimes
  • Property crimes
  • Total crime

Movoto created an equal playing field by using the number of crimes per 100,000 people annual, rather than the total number of crimes.

The statistics in this article is brought to you by Movoto, a licensed brokerage in over thirty states working with local REALTOR®.
