Most of family households invest in expensive air purifiers and air filters. Who wouldn’t when we know that the air that we breathe is not as pure, clean and refreshing as it once was. Bad air quality can be the cause of many respiratory conditions, such as asthma and allergies and having good air quality can relatively improve one’s energy and health.
There are ways that we can purify our air without purchasing an expensive air purifying system. We can clean the air in our living space by using certain types of plants. All indoor plants, whether ornamental or not are able to purify the air to some degree through their natural process, some even remove harmful household toxins in the air in a matter of hours.
These indoor plants that help clean, improve and purify air have more or less different functions on how they cleanse the air. Not only are they good natural air purifiers, they are also a good ornament and add color and life to every home. Sadly, adding plants for clean air is not going to eliminate dust or pollen.
Here is the list of some of the air-filtering plants compiled by NASA as a part of their NASA Clean Air Study.
- Peace Lily – An ornamental indoor plant, the Peace Lily is known for removing benzene and mold spores in the air so it is better placed in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. It removes toxins like trichloroethylene, a chemical found in most cleaners and solvents; and formaldehyde and other pollutants.
- Snake Plant – Also known as Mother-In-Law’s tongue, is found to be one of the best plants for improving indoor air quality by absorbing toxins like nitrogen oxide and formaldehyde.
- Mums – This ornamental plant is effective in removing benzene, a cancer-causing substance found in most chemicals, plastics and cigarettes. It is also effective in removing formaldehyde and ammonia.
Another important approach is proper ventilation. Opening windows and adding exhaust systems help carry pollutants outside.
The quality of indoor air can sometimes be as polluted as outdoor air and since we spend most of our time indoors, these pollutants can endanger the health of every household member. Luckily, we have plants that are efficient in purifying and improving your home’s indoor air. If you are thinking about purchasing an air purifier, also consider having these plants in your home. Not only does it help us, it also beautifies our home. Happy breathing!
